As the temperature continues to rise with the onset of summer, it’s essential to be prepared for the scorching heatwaves that may come our way. With health experts warning about the dangers of extreme heat, it’s crucial to have a heatwave survival guide to keep yourself cool and safe.

Dr Vidhe Sharma, consultant physician at Ruby Hall Clinic, Hinjawadi, Pune, shares 10 essential tips to help you take care of your health during a heatwave.

1. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is crucial to prevent dehydration. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages, as they can contribute to dehydration.

2. Stay Cool: Seek out air-conditioned environments whenever possible to escape the heat. If you don’t have access to air conditioning at home, consider spending time in public places like libraries, shopping malls, or community centres.

3. Dress Appropriately: Choose lightweight, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Opt for light colours that reflect sunlight to keep your body temperature down.

4. Limit Outdoor Activities: Schedule outdoor activities for cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or evening. Take breaks in shaded areas and avoid overexertion.

5. Use Sunscreen: Protect your skin from sunburn by applying sunscreen with a high SPF and reapplying regularly.

6. Take Cool Showers or Baths: Cool off with a refreshing shower or bath to lower your body temperature and feel refreshed.

7. Eat Light Meals: Opt for light, hydrating fruits and vegetables and avoid heavy, greasy foods.

8. Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Keep an eye on elderly neighbours, young children, and those with chronic health conditions, offering assistance and encouragement to stay cool and hydrated.

9. Know the Signs of Heat-Related Illnesses: Familiarize yourself with the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke and seek medical attention if needed.

10. Stay Informed: Stay updated on weather forecasts and heat advisories, following recommendations from local authorities.

By following these tips and prioritizing self-care during heatwaves, you can safeguard your health and well-being amidst the sweltering heat. Remember, staying hydrated, staying cool, and being proactive are key to surviving the heatwave season.
