Designing a Healthy Lifestyle for Seafarers: A Holistic Approach for Crew Welfare
During the 2024 SAFETY4SEA Manila Forum, Dr. Christian Angelo P. Lubaton, Medical Director of Nordic Medical Clinic, highlighted the importance of fostering a holistic approach to crew welfare for seafarers. This approach is grounded in the World Health Organization’s definition of health as encompassing physical, mental, and social well-being, rather than just the absence of disease.
Dr. Lubaton emphasized the need to intentionally design a healthy lifestyle for seafarers, as it does not naturally occur. By examining the concept of choice architecture, he illustrated how the design of environments can significantly influence behavior and decision-making. For example, the prevalence of fast-food outlets in urban areas has been linked to higher BMIs and increased health risks among populations.
Reflecting on his experiences aboard various vessels, Dr. Lubaton noted that many meals offered to seafarers resemble fast food options, raising concerns about the design of meal planning on ships. He highlighted the importance of providing nutritious meals, adequate sleep, and promoting overall health and well-being through well-designed living and working environments onboard.
Best practices discussed during the forum included fast and efficient pre-employment medical services, health education with maritime doctors, access to follow-up care, and involving family members in crew seminars. Continuous training for cooks, optimized crew travel plans, vessel visits for health education, and access to professionals for medical and mental health concerns were also emphasized as crucial in promoting a healthy lifestyle for seafarers.
It was emphasized that promoting a healthy lifestyle for seafarers requires a concerted effort and investment, both onshore and onboard. By addressing the various factors that contribute to seafarers’ well-being, including physical, mental, and social aspects, a holistic approach can be fostered to support the overall health and welfare of maritime crew members.
