Nationwide Egg Recall Issued Amid Salmonella Outbreak
A significant Salmonella outbreak has sparked a nationwide recall of eggs, affecting numerous consumers across several states. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced this alarming situation on Friday, urging the public to check their refrigerators immediately.
The recall involves approximately 1.7 million dozen brown cage-free and brown certified organic eggs supplied by August Egg Company, based in Hilmar, California. These eggs were distributed under various brand names, including Clover, Marketside, and Raley’s.
Consumers Urged to Act Quickly
Health officials recommend that anyone possessing recalled eggs discard them immediately. The affected products can be identified by plant code numbers P-6562 or CA-5330, along with Julian dates between 32 and 126. Notably, these eggs were sold across several states, including California, Nevada, and others, at popular grocery stores such as Walmart, Safeway, and Raley’s.
Outbreak Impact
So far, 79 people across seven states have reported illnesses related to Salmonella Enteritidis, with 21 hospitalizations confirmed. Fortunately, no fatalities have been linked to this outbreak, but officials are cautioning consumers to remain vigilant. Out of the individuals interviewed, 27 reported consuming eggs or egg-containing dishes prior to falling ill.
The FDA’s investigation revealed that some samples taken from August Egg Company’s processing facility tested positive for Salmonella. These pathogens were closely linked to those found in the infected individuals, suggesting a direct correlation.
Precautionary Measures
August Egg Company has halted the sale of fresh shell eggs, redirecting its supply to an egg-breaking facility to combat potential foodborne pathogens. However, consumers may still have contaminated products at home. If you find any of the affected eggs, it is crucial to either throw them away or return them for a full refund.
For those unsure about their egg packaging, it’s advised to dispose of the eggs as a precaution. If you’ve handled the eggs, be sure to wash your hands, utensils, and surfaces thoroughly with hot, soapy water.
Symptoms to Watch For
Consumers are reminded to stay alert for typical Salmonella symptoms, which can include:
- Diarrhea
- Fever
- Abdominal cramping
- Nausea
- Vomiting
While salmonellosis can be serious, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, staying informed and taking quick action can help mitigate health risks.
As authorities continue to monitor the situation, further updates will be provided to the public regarding the outbreak and the recall. If you have any recalled products, please prioritize your health and safety by disposing of them immediately.
