The Impact of Healthy Habits on Mental Health: Study Finds Link to Reduced Depression Risk
Researchers have found that maintaining healthy lifestyle habits can significantly reduce the risk of depression. A study published in Nature Mental Health analyzed data from 290,000 participants and discovered that following seven key healthy-lifestyle factors can lower one’s risk of depression.
The study found that good sleep, frequent social connection, never smoking, regular physical activity, not being sedentary, limiting alcohol consumption, and maintaining a healthy diet were all linked with a lower risk of depression. Good sleep, in particular, was found to reduce the risk of depression by 22 percent.
Additionally, researchers assigned participants to different lifestyle groups based on the number of healthy habits they followed. Those with a favorable lifestyle, following five or more healthy habits, were 57 percent less likely to develop depression compared to those with fewer healthy habits.
Interestingly, the study also looked at genetic risk factors for depression and found that a healthy lifestyle had a greater impact on reducing depression risk than genetics. This highlights the importance of focusing on healthy behaviors to improve mental health.
Experts emphasize the significance of promoting healthy habits in children and adolescents to prevent depression. These findings also underscore the need for societal interventions to improve access to nutritious food, physical activity options, social connections, and adequate sleep.
As depression rates continue to rise, it is essential for individuals to focus on the strategies and behaviors they can control to improve their mental well-being. While lifestyle factors are not a replacement for professional mental health care, they can play a critical role in reducing the risk of depression and promoting overall well-being.
