Artificial Sweeteners Found to Cause Weight Gain, Not Weight Loss

Study Links Artificial Sweeteners to Negative Health Effects

Artificial sweeteners have long been touted as a low-calorie alternative to sugar, but a new study suggests that they may not be the magic bullet for weight loss that many people believe them to be.

The study, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, analyzed 37 studies on artificial sweeteners and found that they did not actually help people lose weight. In fact, the researchers found that people who regularly consumed artificial sweeteners, such as by drinking one or more artificially-sweetened beverages a day, had a higher risk for health issues like weight gain, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

Study author Meghan Azad, an assistant professor at the University of Manitoba, noted that there is more to the issue than just calories, and that additional research is needed to fully understand the potential harms of artificial sweeteners.

Experts have several theories as to why artificial sweeteners may be linked to health problems, including potential interference with the microbiome, causing cravings for sweeter foods, and disrupting the body’s mechanisms for metabolizing sugar. However, definitive answers have not yet been found.

Despite the controversy surrounding artificial sweeteners, the Calorie Control Council, an association representing the low-calorie food and beverage industry, maintains that they can be a tool for managing calorie intake.

In conclusion, cutting back on artificial sweeteners may be a good idea, according to experts, who suggest reducing overall intake of sweeteners, whether they contain calories or not. Ultimately, more research is necessary to fully understand the impact of artificial sweeteners on our health.
