CDC Releases Data on the Most and Least Sanitary Cruise Ships of 2024
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recently released new data on the sanitation scores of cruise ships in 2024, and the results are in. With 114 ships randomly selected and inspected, travelers can now see which cruise ships ranked as the most and least sanitary.
According to the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP), the inspections and scores are crucial in addressing and preventing cases of acute gastroenteritis on board. So far in 2024, there have been 10 outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis, mostly attributed to norovirus.
Among the findings, 20 cruise ships, including those run by Carnival, Celebrity, and Norwegian, received perfect scores of 100. However, there were also 10 cruise ships that received scores of 89 or lower, with the lowest-scoring ship being the Hanseatic Inspiration, run by Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, with a score of 62.
Inspectors focus on various areas of the cruise ship, including the medical center, potable water systems, galleys and dining rooms, and more. If a ship’s sanitation score falls to 85 or below, it is considered a failing score, and inspectors provide recommendations for improvements.
With recent incidents of illness outbreaks on cruise ships, such as a Salmonella outbreak on the Radiance of the Seas and norovirus cases on the Arcadia, it’s essential for passengers to take precautions. The CDC recommends thorough handwashing, staying hydrated, and reporting any signs of illness to cruise staff.
Before booking a cruise, travelers can use the CDC’s inspection search tool to ensure their chosen ship has a sanitation score of 86 or higher. By following these guidelines and staying informed, passengers can help prevent the spread of illness and enjoy a safe and healthy cruise experience.
