International Yoga Day 2024: Celebrating Health and Well-Being Through Yoga
Today, the world celebrates International Yoga Day on June 21, a day dedicated to promoting the various benefits of practicing yoga. Originating in India, yoga has gained worldwide popularity for its physical, spiritual, and mental benefits. This year, the theme for International Yoga Day, as determined by the United Nations, is “Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”, which signifies the shared aspiration of “One Earth, One Family, One Future”.
The proposal to observe International Yoga Day was first made by India at the United Nations’ 69th General Assembly, leading to the unanimous resolution on December 11, 2014, proclaiming June 21 as International Day of Yoga. The World Health Organization has also recognized yoga as a means to improve health in its Global Action Plan for Physical Activity 2018-30.
As yoga promotes a holistic approach to healthy living, it is equally important to maintain a nutritious diet along with yoga practice for a healthy lifestyle. Experts recommend avoiding heavy meals before a workout and instead opting for a small snack or fruit like bananas, nuts, seeds, and berries an hour before a yoga session. Post-yoga, replenish fluids in the body with water or beverages like coconut water. It’s essential to avoid overeating and opt for light, nutritious meals that are easy to digest post-yoga session.
To complement your yoga practice, here are five recipes for your post-yoga diet:
1. Raw Papaya Salad
2. Coconut Water Lemonade
3. Oats Chilla
4. Beetroot Soup
5. Hummus with Avocado
Following a healthy diet and practicing yoga can help you maintain good health and well-being. Embrace these recipes and tips for a balanced lifestyle. Happy International Yoga Day!
