Eating a Mostly Plant-Based Diet May Help You Live Longer and Benefit the Environment
In a groundbreaking new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers have found that following a diet that emphasizes minimally processed plant-based foods while still allowing for modest amounts of meat and dairy could significantly extend your lifespan. The study, which was based on data from over 200,000 participants, revealed that those who closely adhered to the healthy, sustainable eating plan known as the planetary health diet had a 30 percent lower risk of premature death compared to those who did not follow the diet as strictly.
The planetary health diet recommends that half of your diet consist of fresh fruits and vegetables, while the other half is a mix of whole grains, plant proteins, unsaturated plant oils, and limited amounts of meat and dairy. Participants in the study who followed this diet had lower risks of mortality from heart disease, cancer, respiratory issues, and neurodegenerative diseases. Additionally, those with higher adherence to the diet also had lower greenhouse gas emissions and land use.
Dr. Walter Willett, a professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and author of the study, highlighted the dual benefits of the planetary health diet, stating that it not only improves personal health but also positively impacts the environment for future generations. The study also found that reducing meat and dairy consumption can significantly decrease greenhouse gas emissions and free up land for other uses, such as reforestation.
Nutrition expert Lindsay Malone, RDN, emphasized that individuals can experience health and environmental benefits without fully transitioning to a vegan diet by simply reducing meat consumption and incorporating more plant-based foods into their meals.
