The Protea South Senior Citizens Club, in partnership with the Department of Sports Arts and Culture, recently organized a five-kilometre fun walk and aerobics health awareness programme for elderly individuals on April 19. The event aimed to educate elderly people on the importance of maintaining their physical health through regular exercise.
Numerous senior citizens clubs from Protea South and neighboring areas participated in the programme, which included aerobics sessions and informational sessions on the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle as one ages. The Chairperson of the Protea South Senior Citizens Club, Rebecca Tloubatla, emphasized the importance of showing elderly individuals that there is still a fulfilling life even as they grow older.
Various stakeholders, such as Let’s Run, Alma Clinic, and Protea South Local Clinic, were involved in the health awareness programme to provide support and resources to the participants. Thulisile Khumalo, the Marketing Co-ordinator and Community Engagement Officer at Alma Clinic, highlighted the significance of such initiatives in helping seniors protect themselves from various illnesses.
After the training session, the elderly participants were treated to nutritious snacks to replenish their energy levels. One attendee, Alina Masika, shared her positive experience from the event, noting how it had improved her blood pressure readings and overall well-being.
Overall, the health awareness programme was deemed a success, with attendees expressing their desire for similar events to be held regularly. The event not only promoted physical health but also provided a social and educational platform for elderly individuals to interact and share knowledge. As the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle becomes increasingly evident, initiatives like these play a crucial role in empowering senior citizens to lead fulfilling and active lives.
