Experts from Mudra Hospital in Pune are warning those with kidney problems to steer clear of certain foods to maintain their kidney health. Dr. Ravi Kant, a cardiologist and senior consultant, stresses the importance of managing diet to support kidney function.

High-sodium foods can elevate blood pressure and strain weakened kidneys, leading to fluid retention and cardiovascular complications. Similarly, foods high in potassium, like bananas and oranges, can disrupt heart rhythms, especially in advanced kidney disease. It is essential to moderate these foods to prevent complications such as hyperkalemia.

Phosphorus-rich foods, such as dairy and nuts, can challenge compromised kidneys in regulating phosphorus levels, leading to bone weakening and skin irritation. Processed meats should also be avoided as they are high in sodium and contain harmful additives that can accelerate kidney damage.

Furthermore, excessive sugar intake can worsen diabetes, a common comorbidity with chronic kidney disease, leading to further kidney damage. It is recommended to opt for natural sugars in moderation and avoid sugary beverages.

Dairy products, rich in phosphorus and potassium, can be challenging for compromised kidneys to process. Switching to lower-phosphorus alternatives or consuming smaller servings can help mitigate these effects. Caffeine and alcohol should also be limited as they can dehydrate the body and stress the kidneys.
