Increasing Flexibility May Prolong Your Life

Study Finds Strong Link Between Flexibility and Longevity: What You Need to Know

The link between flexibility and longevity has been further solidified by a recent study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports. The study, conducted on middle-aged men and women, revealed a strong association between physical flexibility and decreased mortality from natural causes.

Lead study author Claudio Gil S. Araújo, MD, PhD, explained that flexibility, defined as how well joints move through a range of motion, could potentially be a key factor in living a longer life. While the study cannot definitively prove that flexibility leads to longevity, Araújo highlighted the possibility based on the findings.

The research team assessed the flexibility of participants using a test developed by Araújo in the 1970s, called the Flexitest, which evaluates the flexibility of seven different joints through 20 movements. The results showed that individuals with higher flexibility scores had a lower likelihood of death from natural causes such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Experts suggest that flexibility is not only a measure of physical fitness but can also indicate overall health status. Greater flexibility can help prevent injury, improve joint health, and facilitate everyday movements essential for a healthy lifestyle.

For those looking to improve flexibility, various assessments like the sit-and-reach test and exercises such as static and dynamic stretching can be beneficial. Yoga, which combines both static and dynamic stretching, is recommended as a comprehensive way to enhance joint range of motion and strengthen core muscles.

While the study did not delve into the exact reasons why flexibility may lead to a longer lifespan, the findings underscore the importance of maintaining flexibility for overall health and well-being. Further research is needed to explore the potential implications of flexibility on longevity in more detail.
