Study Reveals: Adopting These 8 Habits Can Add Up to 24 Years to Your Lifespan
A groundbreaking new study has revealed that making just eight simple changes in your lifestyle could potentially add up to 24 years to your lifespan. The study, presented at the American Society for Nutrition’s annual meeting, focused on over 700,000 US veterans to understand the impact of healthy habits on longevity.
According to the study, adopting healthy habits such as being physically active, avoiding opioid addiction, not smoking, managing stress, having a good diet, limiting alcohol consumption, prioritizing good sleep hygiene, and nurturing positive social relationships could significantly increase both male and female lifespans. The study found that on average, males could gain 24 years and females could gain 21 years by embracing these lifestyle changes.
Xuan-Mai T. Nguyen, a health science specialist involved in the study, expressed surprise at the substantial impact of adopting these habits on lifespan. The study also highlighted the detrimental effects of low exercise, opioid usage, and smoking, which were associated with a 30-45% increased risk of death.
Shuchin Bajaj, Founder Director of Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals, emphasized the importance of lifestyle changes in improving health and longevity. While genetics and individual health status play a role in the impact of these habits, Bajaj noted that making positive changes early in life is more effective than trying to reverse damage later on.
The benefits of adopting healthier habits include reduced risk of chronic diseases, improved cardiovascular health, enhanced immune function, weight management, reduced inflammation, lower oxidative stress, and mental health benefits. While a healthy lifestyle doesn’t guarantee a longer life, it can significantly enhance quality of life and reduce the risk of preventable diseases.
Overall, the study underscores the power of making simple changes in daily habits to promote a longer and healthier life. Embracing a balanced diet, regular exercise, stress management, and positive social connections are key components in extending lifespan. As we strive to live healthier, let’s remember that every positive choice we make contributes to a brighter and longer future.
