Preventing Foot Ulcers in Diabetes: A Simple Guide with 5 Practical Tips for Diabetics | Health

The Rise of Diabetes in India: Understanding Foot Ulcers and Prevention Tips

The diabetes epidemic in India has been steadily rising since 1990, with a significant surge after 2000. According to the 2023 ICMR India B study by the Indian Council of Medical Research, around 101 million people in India are currently living with diabetes. This staggering number ranks India as the second most affected country globally by diabetes. Alarmingly, around 57% of diabetic cases in India are currently undiagnosed, totaling approximately 43.9 million.

One of the most concerning complications of diabetes is the development of foot ulcers. These chronic open wounds pose a significant risk to individuals with diabetes due to factors such as high blood sugar, poor circulation, neuropathy, and foot abnormalities. Dr. Rajeev Premnath, a General Laparoscopic Surgeon and Endoscopist at Ramakrishna Hospital in Bengaluru, explained that foot ulcers can lead to severe complications like infections, abscesses, and even gangrene, often requiring amputation.

Dr. Premnath emphasized the importance of regular foot examinations, proper foot hygiene, and wearing properly fitting shoes and socks to prevent the development of foot ulcers. He also highlighted the role of healthcare professionals, such as podiatrists, in assessing and treating foot ulcers in diabetic patients. By adopting lifestyle modifications, such as maintaining a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and monitoring blood sugar levels, individuals with diabetes can reduce the risk of complications and improve their overall well-being.

With the diabetes prevalence in India projected to continue rising, it is crucial for individuals to be proactive in managing their diabetes and preventing complications like foot ulcers. By following simple guidelines and seeking timely medical attention, individuals can mitigate the risk of developing foot ulcers and improve their quality of life.
