According to the study, around 104 million working-age Indians may be suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), a condition that can have serious implications for overall health. Men are more likely to be affected, with a 13% prevalence compared to 5% in women. Factors such as late working hours, excessive social media use, and binge-watching shows at night contribute to the problem.

The impact of sleep deprivation on health is significant, with research linking chronic insomnia to an increased risk of hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Sleep disorders like OSA are also associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and obesity. Furthermore, lack of sleep can weaken the immune system, disrupt digestive health, and exacerbate mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.

To address the sleep crisis in India, a holistic approach is needed. Practicing good sleep hygiene, early detection of sleep disorders, and comprehensive treatment are essential steps towards improving sleep health. A multidisciplinary approach that considers neurological, respiratory, and anatomical factors is crucial for effective intervention.

As the prevalence of sleep disorders continues to rise in urban India, prioritizing sleep health is more important than ever.
