Research Suggests Link Between Mineral Deficiency and Cognitive Decline – Are You Getting Enough?

The importance of calcium and magnesium in your diet goes beyond just maintaining strong bones and regulating muscle and nerve function. A new study published in the journal Nutrients suggests that these two vital minerals may also play a role in cognitive function.

Researchers from the Medical University of Łódź Department of Geriatrics in Poland conducted a study with 1,220 adults over the age of 60 who were hospitalized. They found that individuals with lower levels of magnesium and calcium in their blood generally scored lower on cognitive tests compared to those with normal levels of these nutrients.

The study also revealed that participants with low levels of both magnesium and calcium performed the worst on cognitive tests, while those with normal calcium levels but low magnesium levels also scored poorly. Additionally, factors like age, BMI, and heart failure were also linked to lower cognitive scores.

However, it’s important to note that the study only shows a correlation and not causation. Other factors like diabetes and kidney function were not taken into account, and hospitalized individuals may have underlying conditions that could impact their magnesium and calcium levels.

In terms of dietary intake, most adults are advised to consume between 310–420 mg of magnesium and 1,000–1,300 mg of calcium daily. Foods like beans, nuts, dairy, and dark, leafy greens are rich sources of these nutrients. If getting enough through diet alone is challenging, supplements may be an option as long as you stay within recommended ranges.

Overall, ensuring you have adequate levels of calcium and magnesium in your diet is crucial for overall health, including cognitive function. While the study suggests a potential link between these minerals and cognitive decline, it’s not something to be overly concerned about in your everyday life. Focus on maintaining a balanced diet and consult with a healthcare provider if you have any concerns about your nutrient levels.
