The Medical Minute: How to Stay Healthy During the Holidays

Keeping Santa Healthy: Tips for Surviving the Holidays

This holiday season, even Santa Claus himself is not immune to the challenges of staying healthy. While most of us struggle with sticking to our diets and exercise routines during the festive period, Santa faces a unique set of health risks as he prepares for his annual global journey on Christmas Eve.

First, there is the issue of cold weather and its impact on Santa’s heart health. Dr. Chad Zack, a cardiologist at Penn State Heart and Vascular Institute, warns that the combination of cold temperatures and strenuous physical activity could increase Santa’s risk of heart attack. It is important for Santa to take breaks and pay attention to the warning signs of a heart attack, such as chest pain and shortness of breath.

Next, there are the perils of winter weather to consider. While Santa’s flying sleigh and reindeer may not get stuck in a snowdrift, he still needs to be prepared for emergencies. Dr. Jeffrey Lubin, vice chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Penn State Health, recommends keeping an emergency kit with essentials like blankets and a charged cell phone. Santa should also protect his extremities from frostbite and avoid consuming alcohol to stay warm.

As Santa crosses off each house on his list, the stress of the holiday season can take its toll. Dr. Julie Radico, a clinical psychologist at Penn State Health, advises Santa to focus on what he can control and practice self-care to alleviate stress. Taking time for self-care activities, like engaging in a favorite hobby or spending time with loved ones, can help Santa maintain a positive attitude and mental well-being.

And, of course, there are the countless plates of cookies and glasses of milk awaiting Santa at every stop. Heather Tressler, a registered dietitian at Penn State Health Celiac Clinic, recommends allowing yourself to enjoy holiday treats in moderation and focusing on balanced meals with lean protein and fruits and vegetables. Santa should also make time for physical activity, like going for a walk or dancing, to offset the indulgences of the season.

So as you navigate the challenges of staying healthy this holiday season, take a page out of Santa’s book and prioritize your well-being. Remember to listen to your body, seek help when needed, and practice self-care to ensure a happy and healthy holiday season for all.
