The Workout Primer: An Introduction to Orangetheory Fitness for Beginners

4 Tips for a Successful Orangetheory Fitness Class

Title: Tips for Newbies: What to Expect at Your First Orangetheory Fitness Class

Orangetheory Fitness is taking the fitness world by storm with its unique HIIT workout approach. With over 1,000 locations and counting, it’s clear that this boutique fitness franchise is here to stay. But for those who haven’t tried it yet, stepping into an Orangetheory class can be intimidating.

Here are some tips from the studio’s co-founder Ellen Latham to help you feel more prepared and confident before your first Orangetheory Fitness class:

1. Prepare to put the “theory” into practice
Before class, each participant is fitted with a heart rate monitor to track their heart rate throughout the workout. The goal is to spend time in the “orange zone” (84 percent of your maximum heart rate) to achieve a metabolic response. Each class focuses on strength, power, endurance, or other elements, with different stations like treadmills, rowing machines, and weights.

2. Avoid comparing yourself to others in the class
Remember that Orangetheory is about your individual workout. Coaches are trained to offer modifications for all exercises, so don’t feel pressured to keep up with others. Customize your cardio work and strength training to suit your fitness level and goals.

3. 12 minutes in the orange zone is a goal, not the expectation
Orangetheory workouts can be intense, so start at your own pace. The goal is to sustain 84 percent of your max heart rate for 12 minutes eventually, but it’s okay to work towards that gradually. Celebrate small victories and improvements with each class.

4. The workout should feel challenging, but not run you down
The focus at Orangetheory is on pushing yourself to spark change in your body, not on pushing yourself to the point of pain. Listen to your body, go at your own pace, and aim to feel uncomfortable for 12 minutes, not in pain. Remember to have a foam roller handy for post-class recovery.

If you’re curious about trying Orangetheory Fitness, keep these tips in mind to make your first class a positive and empowering experience. It’s all about embracing the challenge, listening to your body, and celebrating your progress along the way.
