Strategies to Improve Mental Health for Senior Citizens
According to recent statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), over 20% of adults aged 60 and above suffer from mental or neurological disorders, impacting their quality of life. This highlights the importance of understanding and addressing the mental health needs of senior citizens, which are often overlooked.
A recent Lancet Report has projected that the number of dementia cases in India is expected to almost double by 2050, reaching 11 million from 3.8 million in 2019. This calls for increased awareness and effective strategies to support the mental health of older adults.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Shabnam Mir emphasized the need for a robust senior care ecosystem in India to cater to the evolving needs of the senior population. She highlighted the importance of specialized care facilities, such as Memory Care Homes, to address healthcare solutions for conditions related to ageing.
Dr. Mir suggested comprehensive approaches to improve senior citizens’ mental health, including education and workshops, regular health check-ups, physical activity, social engagement, nutrition, cognitive stimulation, telehealth services, and partnerships with mental health organizations.
By implementing these strategies, Dr. Mir believes that society can create an environment where seniors receive the support and resources they need to thrive mentally, emotionally, and socially.
Overall, the focus on senior citizens’ mental health is crucial, and by addressing these needs, we can enhance the overall well-being of older adults and ensure they lead fulfilling lives.
