A new study has found that the Mediterranean diet, known for its health benefits for adults, may also have positive effects on children’s heart health. The study, published in the journal JAMA Network Open, analyzed nine previous studies involving 577 participants aged 3 to 18.

The research revealed that incorporating the Mediterranean diet for at least eight weeks was associated with lower blood pressure and total cholesterol in children. These findings suggest that early adoption of healthy dietary habits can help prevent cardiovascular diseases and metabolic disorders that often begin in childhood.

Lead study author Dr. José Francisco López-Gil emphasized the importance of promoting a diet rich in whole foods and healthy fats for children to optimize their health and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Dr. Stuart Berger, a pediatric cardiologist, highlighted the significance of consuming unprocessed foods like fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and fish at all stages of life.

Experts recommend increasing the intake of “real foods” and reducing highly processed foods rich in added sugars and sodium in children’s diets. While not every child needs to adopt the Mediterranean diet, incorporating age-appropriate dietary plans and exercise recommended by pediatricians can be beneficial.

Family mealtime also plays a vital role in the Mediterranean diet, as it encourages connection and healthy eating habits. Future research is needed to assess the long-term effects of the Mediterranean diet on children’s heart health, with a focus on larger sample sizes and diverse populations.
