Importance of Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyle in Preventing Non-Communicable Diseases Among Adolescents
Adolescence is a crucial phase of life where individuals undergo rapid physical, emotional, and cognitive changes. It is during this period that habits are formed, shaping the trajectory of one’s health and well-being in the years to come. The significance of nutrition and a healthy lifestyle plays a pivotal role in preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among adolescents, including diabetes, which is a growing problem in India.
According to the latest ICMR study, there are a staggering 100 million diabetics and 139 million pre-diabetics in India, up from only 4 years ago. However, these diseases are largely preventable, with 80% of type 2 diabetes preventable with three lifestyle changes – eating right, increasing physical activity, and avoiding tobacco.
Dr. Rajeev Gupta, Director of Internal Medicine at CK Birla Hospital in Delhi, emphasized the importance of nutrition in adolescence. He stated that a well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats provides essential nutrients necessary for the body’s proper functioning. Not only does it fuel physical activities, but it also supports cognitive abilities and emotional well-being.
Dr. Gupta also highlighted the role of a healthy lifestyle in reducing the risk of NCDs. Regular physical activity promotes cardiovascular fitness, strengthens bones, and improves mental health. Engaging in activities such as sports, yoga, or brisk walking helps maintain a healthy weight and reduces the likelihood of developing conditions like obesity, diabetes, and hypertension.
Dr. Nalini Saligram, Founder and CEO at Arogya World, stressed the importance of prevention through lifestyle changes. She mentioned that unhealthy eating is the number one cause of death and recommended using compelling games and activities to educate adolescents about healthy food choices.
She suggested empowering adolescents to make informed decisions about their diet and lifestyle, instilling lifelong habits that promote overall health and well-being. By prioritizing nutrition and a healthy lifestyle, we can prevent NCDs among adolescents and secure a healthier future for the next generation.
